cross sm

Churches are full of different symbols. Symbolism is used a great deal in Christianity to remind people of lots of different things. All churches have at least one cross. The symbol of the cross reminds Christians about the death of Jesus. Christians believe that Jesus died to save everyone.

The fish was a secret symbol for the early Christians, who were persecuted and often put in prison for their beliefs. The first letters of the words Jesus Christ, God’s Son, Saviour spell ICTHUS in the Greek language. Icthus is the Greek word for fish and the first Christians used to scratch fish signs on walls and in the sand. Today some Christians wear a fish badge or a have a fish sign on their car.

This giant fish was made out of wire and paper by children at a church summer holiday club at Bushey Baptist Church.

spire sm

Some churches have tall spires. Spires were built as a symbol of the church reaching upward to God in heaven.

This banner was made at Bushey Baptist Church. Banners tell people something about Jesus and help them to worship. This is a bit like stained glass windows used to do many years ago. This banner has the symbol of doves in the centre. The dove represents the Holy Spirit and also peace.
