Background Information
John the Baptist (the cousin of Jesus) preached a message of repentance. He called people to abandon their wicked ways and get dipped in the River Jordan as a sign that they were ready to start a new life which would be pleasing to God.
Matthew Chapter 3 describes how Jesus was baptised by John before beginning his three year ministry teaching people about God.
In Jesus Through Art there is a copy of Piero della Francesca’s ‘The Baptism of Christ’ (National Gallery, London) with related photocopiable worksheets at the back of the book (available on loan). The Trust also has copies of the video ‘Matthew’s Gospel’ - the Bible seen as a film - available for loan.
Baptism Today
Different denominations practise slightly different methods of baptism. Many churches baptise infants at a font. Water from the font is poured over the babies head and the sign of the cross is made on the babies forehead. The child is welcomed into the church family. Parents and chosen Godparents promise to teach the baby about the Christian faith. A special candle is usually presented - to symbolise Jesus being a ‘light’ to guide the child through life. When the child is old enough they can remake the promises of baptism for themselves at another special church service.
Other churches have services of thanksgiving and dedication for babies and wait until a person is old enough to decide for themselves whether or not they want to become a Christian and get baptised.
